Strategies for Effectively Steering Your Organization Through a Challenging Healthcare Landscape

The last time we gathered at The Ritz-Carlton in Amelia Island was in early March 2020.  It was the last event that many people attended for the following two years.  It was no surprise then that it was with some sense of nostalgia that we returned to this beautiful location on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean late last month.

It is also no surprise that the 2023 Healthcare Law & Compliance Institute did not disappoint.  The Opening Panel to kick off the three day event was hailed as “Excellent! What a great way to start the meetings!” and provided a wonderful overview of the myriad of topics impacting healthcare.

Highlights of the two and a half day Institute include:

  • A plenary session featuring Allan Medina, Senior Deputy Chief of the Criminal Division of the Fraud Section at the U.S. Department of Justice discussing with Matthew Curley of Bass Berry & Sims “DOJ Perspectives on Compliance Best Practices for Healthcare Providers.”
  • A robust and highly engaging session starring the vastly experienced Professor of National Health Policy at Brandeis University, Dr. Stuart Altman, who presented an economic outlook on market trends, disruptive forces and opportunity amidst accelerated industry change on which one attendee commented “Stuart Altman is incredibly knowledgeable and so funny, I've never heard anyone deliver such grim news with such a deft touch and so much humor.”
  • A practical and thoughtful panel session that addressed how traditional healthcare providers are being forced to adapt in order to compete or even survive and discussed a continuum of risk-based organizations all the way from those taking minimal risk to full risk as options for navigating the increasingly complex healthcare environment.

  • A glimpse into the minds of Chief Strategy Officers at hospitals and health systems as a panel of strategists discussed priorities, predictions, and how to optimize the relationship between the Chief Strategy Officer and the Chief Legal Officer / General Counsel.  Attendees always enjoy hearing from other functional areas and this session was very well received.
  • A chance to collaborate, communicate, and calibrate during our Legal Department Operations Roundtables which allowed attendees to come together in smaller groups to discuss some of the key challenges that they are facing in running their departments, addressing questions around building teams and ensuring engagement.

Taking a break from the general session room, attending General Counsel and Chief Legal Officers engaged in a series of interactive Think Tank discussions on a wide range of topics, including Promoting DEI Initiatives with Outside Counsel, Alternative Strategies for Engaging Providers, Practical Guide to Information Governance, Real Estate Lease Compliance: Covering Transactional and Operational Risks, Commercial Reasonableness, and Becoming a “21st Century Provider”.

Over the course of the two and a half day event, the networking and connection was incredible. The quality of the speaker faculty and the high levels of discussion amongst the attendees was highly conducive for learning and information exchange.  Lastly, fantastic networking, delicious meals, and impeccable service under the Amelia Island sun made for an incredibly valuable and memorable experience and attendees left the Institute feeling refreshed and renewed.
